“Sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.” (Romans 6:14)
It is generally believed that knowing and following the do’s and don’ts of the law makes you a better Christian. However, the Bible says the law empowers and increases sin…Do you believe the Bible?
The Bible says, “… the law gives sin its power.” (1 Corinthians 15:56), “The law came in so that the transgression (sin) would increase…” (Romans 5:20) “If you obey every law but one, you are still guilty of breaking them all.” (James 2:10)
“He who has ears, let him hear.”
The law is holy, righteous, and good but with impossible standards to keep. Its purpose is to teach us we are sinners in need of a Savior. Once born-again (made spiritually alive) by grace through faith, to say a Christian needs the law to stop sinning is misleading and unbiblical. The Bible says it is grace that teaches us to say “no” to sin, not the law.
Let’s look at Titus 2:11-14 “For the Grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It (Grace) teaches us: To say “no” to ungodliness and worldy passions… To live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age… (Grace) redeems us from all wickedness… (Grace) purifies a people that are God’s very own, eager to do what is good.”
Grace is another name for Jesus. Grace is the unmerited favor of God. It enables man to live by constant faith in Jesus Christ for everything. Grace is the author and perfector of our faith. Where the law increased sin, grace increased all the more. For a Christian to mix law with grace would be foolishness.
“The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17) “Christ is the end of the law, so that there may be righteousness for all who believe.” (Romans 10:4) “I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” (Galatians 2:21)
“He who has eyes, let him see.”
LIFE LESSON: Living by Grace through faith (not by the law) makes everything of Jesus and nothing of man. Grace allows man to live by constant faith in Jesus Christ for everything. The law reveals man’s effort while Grace reveals Jesus’ finished work and gives all the glory and praise to God.
Salvation is a gift from God by Grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, not by any law keeping so that no one may boast!
